As we begin our hike around the northern side of Kilimanjaro, close to the Kenyan border, we climb ever higher, leaving the grasslands and entering a rocky plateau as we approach Moir Hut camp.
The camp is partly surrounded by tall cliffs, protecting us from the ever increasing winds and chills.
The Moir Hut camp contains a dilapidated and crumbling teepee-like hut, which we are told was an old research station. Our guides also quietly hint that the station was used by poachers escaping the authorities to hide out, in days gone by. Today the hut is open to the elements, and unlikely to offer any protection to those in need.
